Rain King by Counting Crows-- This one is really off the wall. I woke up with this song at 4 a.m. and have struggled hard all day to remember what little I knew of it. I only knew 2 words from the song: "service" and "king" (actually, I thought it was something like "service to the king"). The correct phrase is "service in the Queen", and if the song wasn't named Rain King I'm sure the lyric search wouldn't have figured it out from that. According to some of the comments on the lyrics page, the song is based on the book "Henderson the Rain King" by Saul Bellows. I wonder if that's a free Kindle book?
When I think of heaven (Deliver me in a black-winged bird)
I think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathers
and all other instruments of faith and sex and God
In the belly of a black-winged bird
Don't try to feed me
I've been here before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen I belong anywhere but in between
She's been crying I've been thinking And I am the Rain King
Mama, why am I so alone?
I can't go outside
I'm scared I might not make it home
I'm alive but I'm sinking in
If there's anyone at home at your place
Why don't you invite me in
Don't try to bleed me
I've been there before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen
I belong anywhere but in between
She's been lying
I've been sinking
And I am the Rain King
Hey, I only want the same as anyone
Henderson is waiting for the sun
Oh, it seems night endlessly begins and ends
After all the dreaming I come home again...
When I think of heaven (Deliver me in a black-winged bird)
I think of dying Lay me down in a field of flame and heather
Render up my body into the burning heart of God in the belly of a black-winged bird
Don't try to bleed me
I've been here before and I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the Queen
I belong anywhere but in between
She's been dying
I been drinking and I am the Rain King.

As Incense
As Incense is on a cd that we use for Rejoice and Praise. I listened to the cd on Friday on my way to Sam's house. I usually skip this song because I hate the melody and I hate the singer's voice, but something about the words held my attention this time. "Keep a guard on my mouth, keep a watch on my lips, let my heart not cry out for any evil that there is." Very beautiful. I'll have to check to see where in the Bible this is from.
As incense, as incense
let my prayer before you rise
the lifting up of my hands, the lifting up of my hands
as an evening sacrifice
Keep a guard on my mouth,
keep a watch on my lips
let my heart not cry out
for any evil that there is
As incense, as incense
let my prayer before you rise
the lifting up of my hands, the lifting up of my hands
as an evening sacrifice
As incense, as incense
let my prayer before you rise
the lifting up of my hands, the lifting up of my hands
as an evening sacrifice
Keep a guard on my mouth,
keep a watch on my lips
let my heart not cry out
for any evil that there is
As incense, as incense
let my prayer before you rise
the lifting up of my hands, the lifting up of my hands
as an evening sacrifice

Big Girls Don't Cry, by Fergie
Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie was in my head this morning. I had to look it up based on just the line about "missing their blanket". Reading the lyrics I can see why this song was with me today. Last night I talked with Ellen about Granddad, and she said she had cried--just not hysterically like her sisters. So crying was on my mind. Also, we are all missing Ben (he died on Feb. 14) and there has been a lot of talk on Facebook from the cousins about missing him.
Big Girls Don't Cry lyricsSongwriters: Ferguson, Stacy; Gad, Tobias;
The smell of your skin lingers on me now
You're probably on your flight back to your home town
I need some shelter of my own protection, baby
To be with myself and center
Clarity, peace, serenity
I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry
The path that I'm walkin', I must go alone
I must take the baby steps 'til I'm full grown, full grown
Fairy tales don't always have a happy ending, do they?
And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay
I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do

And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Like the little school mate in the school yard
We'll play jacks and Uno cards
I'll be your best friend and you'll be mine
Valentine
Yes, you can hold my hand if you want to
'Cause I want to hold yours too
We'll be playmates and lovers
And share our secret worlds
But it's time for me to go home
It's getting late, dark outside
I need to be with myself, and center
Clarity, peace, serenity
I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you

Need You Now
Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
I think I've had this one before. It not only was in my head this morning, I've had it on my mind ever since. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I would love to sing it on-stage with a microphone. I'm grateful for many things, but one of the most important is music and how I've been able to use it in my life as a performer, despite being just marginally talented.
Picture perfect memories, scattered all around the floor
Reaching for the phone 'cause I can't fight it anymore
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now
Said I wouldn't call but I've lost all control and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now
Another shot of whiskey, can't stop looking at the door
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time

It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now
Said I wouldn't call but I've lost all control and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now
Woah, woah
Guess I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now
And I said I wouldn't call but I'm a little drunk and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now, I just need you now
Oh baby, I need you now

What Do You Want From Me
I don't actually know if What Do You Want From Me is the name of today's song or not. Those are the only words I know. On lyricsearch 3 songs came up with that title, and none seemed quite right. I'll have to pay more attention the next time I hear it!!
