Build Up is one of the songs R and P sang in church yesterday. I've had a few R and P songs in my head lately, and I guess that's because I've been working on our list for yesterday. Church went really great this week, despite a few small disappointments. We have such a flexible group--sometimes a little too laid-back, but I imagine I need that to balance out my perfectionism. Lots of talent, that's for sure. I love every one of them, despite the quirks.
Build up, prepare the way
God is near, God is here today

Clocks by Coldplay
This is the first song by Coldplay that has been in my head since I started keeping track. Clocks is one I don't really know, and haven't heard it often. It must have been on the radio during one of my recent drives. The first time I ever heard it was on a video by someone named Mario on how to play piano. It does have a gorgeous piano part, and that is the part that was in my head this morning. I had to work hard to call up any lyrics. Coldplay, of course, was a big part of summer/fall 2005 for me. I had one cd that I listened to nonstop, getting super emotional about Emily and Julia leaving for college. The day before they left I worked myself into a full blown anxiety attack, which I thought was a heart attack. $3000 and 4 hours in the emergency room to find out I was just really, really sad about my babies leaving.
Lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead
Singin’, come out if things aren’t said
Shoot an apple off my head
And a, trouble that can’t be named
Tigers waitin’ to be tamed
Singing, yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yoooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Confusion never stops
Closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna, come back and take you home
I could not stop that you now know
Singin’, come out upon my seas
Curse missed opportunities
Am I, a part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease
Singin’, yoooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Oh nothing else compares
Oh nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Yooooooooooooo ohhhhhh
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead

King of Anything
This morning my song was King of Anything by Sara Bareilles. I love this song! I hear it often on my drive to the Cities. The lyrics of this song make me wish I were a songwriter--I love the words!
Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by
You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast
I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save
Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?
You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset
I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by
You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent

And ride off into your delusional sunset
I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see

Hey, Soul Sister
This morning I had Hey, Soul Sister by Train in my head. This is the first repeat I've had since I started keeping track. I love Train but I didn't know it!!
Just the Way You Are
I woke up very early Monday morning (around 2 a.m.) and had the song Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars in my head. I do hear this one occasionally on my drives to/from the Cities, but I think this time it was triggered by having Sam staying with us. Nothing and no one is as amazing to me as he is, and I grew even more attached this weekend. I was really sad yesterday when he left, but he said "No cry!" so I didn't. These words are definitely about Sam:
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause (Sam) you're amazing
Just the way you are
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause (Sam) you're amazing
Just the way you are

Leather and Lace
It's kind of weird how these songs are so strong in my head when I first wake up, and then are gone so fast if I don't write them down right away. I've been trying to remember songs from the past 3 days, since I haven't written them down, and it's been really hard! This one was gone fast, but I remembered that (I thought) Stevie Nicks sang it. I didn't know until seeing the lyrics this morning that Don Henley sang it with her. Leather and Lace must have been on the radio on Friday when I drove home with Sam. Because of working hard to remember songs from the past 3 days, today's song is long gone. If I get it back I'll add it to the list, but I don't think I will remember.
Is love so fragile...
And the heart so hollow
Shatter with words...
Impossible to follow
You're saying I'm fragile... I try not to be
I search only... for something I can't see
I have my own life... and I am stronger
Than you know
But I carry this feeling
When you walked into my houseThat you won't be walking out the doorStill I carry this feeling
When you walked into my house
That you won't be walking out the door
Lovers forever... face to face
My city or mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you today
Give to me your leather...
Take from me... my lace
You in the moonlight
With your sleepy eyes
Could you ever love a man like me
And you were right
[From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/s/stevie-nicks-lyrics/leather-and-lace-lyrics.html ]
When I walked into your houseI knew I'd never want to leave
Sometimes I'm a strong man
Sometimes cold and scared
And sometimes I cry
But that time I saw you
I knew with you to light my nights
Somehow I'd get by
First time I saw you
I knew with you to light my nights
Somehow I would get by
Lovers forever... face to face
My city or mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you today
Give to me your leather...
Take from me... my lace
Lovers forever... face to face
My city or mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you to stay
Give to me your leather
Take from me... my lace
Take from me... my lace
Take from me... my lace
The Way I Am
Friday I woke up with The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson in my head. As often happens, there were only a few words in my memory: sweater and baby. Definitely not enough for my lyric server (or maybe it would have been--I should try it!). But that morning I drove to St. Paul to pick up Sam to bring him here for the weekend, and this song was on a couple of times.
If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I'd find a match
'Cause I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am
If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching, I'll make it better
'Cause I love the way you call me, baby
And you take me the way I am
I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear
'Cause I love you more than I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am, you take me the way I am

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
I need to catch up on the last few days. Sam is staying with us for the weekend and he's keeping me a little busy! Thursday I woke up with Somewhere Over the Rainbow (the new version) in my head and for the first time since I began keeping track it was part of a dream. Someone was telling me that they hoped that someday they would find the end of the rainbow and I told them that I've been living "over the rainbow" for the past 6 years. Meaning: my life has been wonderful and perfect for the past 6 years. I woke up feeling so grateful for all that I have. Funny about the "6 years" part, though, since it was 6 years ago that Emily and Julia left for college. That was NOT a happy time, and although we've adjusted (and they now have been out of college for almost 2 years) I'm still happiest when one or more of my kids are home.
This weekend with Sam has been awesome and I'm grateful for him and for his parents for being so generous with us!

How to Save A Life
I've been awake since 5:30 and I still have How to Save A Life by the Fray in my head. The only words I knew were "where did I go wrong I lost a friend". The words are about the end of a relationship, and what could have been done to save it. I'm so grateful for my relationship with Tom. It hasn't always been easy, and we've both made mistakes, but we are in a very good place right now. I worried for many years that when the kids grew up we'd have nothing to say to each other. Of course I didn't realize that we'd still be talking about the kids!! But also, we really enjoy being together and we always have lots to talk about. He really is my best friend, and I'm so thankful for that.
Step one you say "We need to talk."
He walks you say "Sit down it's just a talk."
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I've stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
Let him know that you know best
'Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
Pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I've stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/how-to-save-a-live-lyrics-fray.html ]
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And would I've stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Smile by Uncle Kracker
Smile by Uncle Kracker was in my head this morning...
It's kind of amazing to me that I can hear a song for months--maybe even years--without having a clue what the words are or who sings it. Has radio changed or am I not paying attention? Smile is one of those songs. Uncle Kracker? Are you kidding me? And all the words I remembered when I woke up this morning were "You make me smile like..." a fool? A what? Anyway, I hear this song all the time but never gave it 2 seconds of thought.
I remember in about 1964 KDWB had a contest where you could choose a whole hour of songs that they'd play. I spent days making my playlist but never sent it in. I knew every word to every one of those songs, and certainly knew who sang them (and probably tons of personal info about each of the singers). Of course back then you had to work pretty hard (i.e. go to a store, buy a magazine and read it) to find out anything about a celebrity!
Uncle Kracker - Smile lyrics
You´re better then the best
I´m lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow that´s right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me
Lets me know that it´s ok
Yeah it´s ok
And the moments when my good times start to fade
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Even when you´re gone
Somehow you come along
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack and just like that
You steal away the rain and just like that
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Don´t know how I lived without you
'Cuz every time that I get around you
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like bird
Dizzy in my head

Say You Love Me
Say You Love Me by Fleetwood Mac was in my head this morning. I'm pretty sure we heard it on the radio on the way home from Anderson's last night. It was New Years Eve but we only made it until 10:30. I did wake up at midnight because the Johnsons were shooting bottle rockets. We left our Christmas lights on when we went to bed so the neighbors wouldn't know what losers we are!!
New Years resolutions:
1. lose 10 pounds for Emily's wedding (drink more water, eat more fruits and vegetables, more exercise)
2. stop biting my thumbnails
3. less computer, more reading
4. call friends and arrange outings more often
Say You Love Me, written by Christine McVie
Have mercy, baby on a poor girl like me,
You know I'm falling, falling, falling at your feet,
I'm tingling right from my head to my toes,
So help me, help me, help me make the feeling go.
'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down,
And there's not another living soul around,
Then you woo me until the sun comes up,
And you say that you love me.
Have pity baby,
Just when I thought it was over,
Now you got me running, running, running for cover.
I'm begging you for a little sympathy,
'and if you use me again it'll be the end of me.
'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down,
And there's not another living soul around,
Then woo me until the sun comes up,
And you say that you love me.
Don't wanna talk about it
Don't wanna think about it
Don't wanna think about it anymore
Baby, baby, hope you're gonna stay away,
'cause I'm getting weaker, weaker everyday,
I guess I'm not as strong as I used to be,
And if you use me again it'll be the end of me.
'Cause when the loving starts, and the lights go down,
And there's not another living soul around,
Then woo me until the sun comes up,
And you say that you love me.
Say that you love me
say that you love me.
Fallin' fallin' fallin
Fallin' fallin' fallin
